Fire Codes & Standards

The California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) develops regulations that promote fire and life safety throughout California. These regulations are incorporated into the California Building Standards Code (Title 24), including the California Building Code and California Fire Code.

California’s building and fire codes are updated on a three-year cycle. San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department and its member cities adopt the applicable California Fire Code and local amendments to address fire and life safety requirements within our communities.

These codes and locally adopted requirements are used by Fire Prevention staff during plan review, permitting, construction inspections, annual inspections, and other fire and life safety activities.
