San Mateo Opens New Fire Station 25
San Mateo, CA — On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, the leadership teams from the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department, Public Works Department, Parks and Recreation Department, and City of San Mateo councilmembers came together to celebrate the grand opening of the new Fire Station 25 with a ribboncutting ceremony.
The new station is at 1455 Shafter Street, on the corner of Borel Avenue and Shafter Street.
The project is a joint effort of the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department and the City of San Mateo. Initial development for the project started in 2016, and the San Mateo City Council unanimously approved the project on Nov. 5, 2018. The award of construction was granted to Concord’s Sausal Corporation and the groundbreaking ceremony took place on Nov. 12, 2019.
The new station is funded in part through Measure C, an increase in the City’s Transient Occupancy Tax (“hotel tax”) approved by voters in 1998 to fund needed seismic upgrades and other safety improvements to San Mateo’s safety facilities. The former Station 25, originally constructed in 1954, at the corner of Alameda de las Pulgas and Barneson Avenues was identified as a priority for upgrading.
The new station is a modernized facility that consists of a single engine drive-through apparatus bay within a two-story structure totaling 4,950 square feet. The building is designed to house and support a typical fire engine crew, which consists of a Fire Captain and two Firefighters. The new Fire Station 25 includes a kitchen, a dining area, an office, an exercise room, a day room, private sleeping quarters (to accommodate all gender staff), lockers, storage areas, and an emergency generator. The current fire personnel assigned to the Fire Station 25 will relocate to the new station.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony respected social distancing and mask requirements.
